How to Kickstart an SEO Program in the Age of AI

To say that the introduction of AI technologies such as OpenAI has disrupted the way the world of SEO operates would be a giant understatement. All of a sudden, it seems AI can do everything: create images, generate content, write code, and even create SEO strategies. With AI being able to do all of these things, is there even a point in doing SEO “by hand” anymore?

The answer is: more than ever!

In a world where search engines are inundated with repetitive AI-generated content – remember, AI can only rehash and repack existing stuff it finds online, it doesn’t really create anything or understand the deeper context behind the stuff it generates – the best way to stand out is to have a personalized, optimized approach that understands your products and services, and how to market them to people who are most likely to be interested in them.

More specifically, a modern SEO strategy needs to incorporate comprehensive brand building, extensive customer research, an understanding of the intent behind keywords and how to address it in your content, and quality content that contains expert opinions, proprietary data and research, and other content that meets Google’s EEAT (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness) guidelines. Your tracking and reporting also needs to be on-point in order to be able to properly assess the performance of your website and better leverage its strengths.

Needless to say, AI can’t do any of the above. And unless it evolves into a true artificial intelligence that appears in science fiction movies, it never will be. As always, having the right SEO professionals in your corner remains the best way to ensure your website ranks well and stands the test of time.

Is Google Reducing the Presence of AI Overviews?

Just a month after Google announced its rollout of AI Overviews (AIOs) in the US market, it appears that they’ve decided to substantially reduce the amount of AIOs they show in search results. According to a study that was carried out in June, the percentage of tested keywords that provided AIOs had gone down from 64% to just 8.71%.

This huge drop in AIO appearances has been observed in a number of major industries such as education, ecommerce, entertainment, real estate, and so on. The AIOs that do appear now contain half as many product comparison tables, fewer product carousels and viewers, and far less Quora and Reddit citations. Whether Google introduced these changes as part of their ongoing efforts to improve AIOs, or they feel AIOs aren’t nearly as necessary as they previously thought, only time will tell.

Two things are certain: AIOs aren’t going away, and will remain a focal point for SEO experts, publishers, and content creators, as this search feature disrupts the conventional way we use search engines. It may also make it more difficult for some businesses to attract organic traffic, especially if they don’t have access to SEO specialists who can help them drive their websites to online success.
